I am thrilled to share with you the exciting new about the growing demand for pelvic floor PT here in Charlotte, NC. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of helping countless women improve their pelvic health, and it’s gratifying to witness the increased awareness and demand for these essential services.
Understanding Pelvic Floor Therapy
First, let’s quickly discuss pelvic floor physical therapy. This specialized form of care involves exercises, manual techniques, and education to strengthen and rehabilitate the pelvic floor muscles. The pelvic floor is a part of your core and has many functions in the body (see my previous blog post here: “The Floor of Your Core = The Pelvic Floor”) Pelvic floor issues can arise from childbirth, surgery, aging, or other health conditions, and symptoms can include urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, pain in pelvis/hips/back, diastasis recti, and pelvic organ prolapse. This therapy is crucial for patients recovering from childbirth or surgery or those experiencing chronic pelvic pain. It is also important for women who are pregnant to manage symptoms and set them up for a successful birth.
But pelvic floor PT can also be preventative. For example, one woman came to see me, and she wasn’t having any symptoms but was curious about what I do. Afterward, she posted on Instagram, “I had a great first experience with Dr. Brenda. I left feeling grounded, stronger than I realized, and so calm. Intimidated by pelvic floor PT? You might be pleasantly surprised!”
Word is Spreading
According to a study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1 in 4 U.S. women report moderate to severe symptoms of pelvic dysfunction. Unfortunately, these issues have often been underdiagnosed and undertreated, partly due to the stigma and lack of awareness surrounding them. Often, women are embarrassed to seek care; they worry their doctor will dismiss their concerns, or they believe their symptoms are their “new normal,” and they just need to deal with it.
Thankfully, times are changing as women try to spread the word through social media, podcasts, and YouTube videos. According to Exploding Topics, based on global Google search volume, interest in “pelvic floor therapy” has grown 138% over the past five years! Additionally, the hashtag #pelvicfloorphysicaltherapy has nearly 200K Instagram posts, and #pelvicfloor has 737K!
Personally, I’ve noticed more clients coming to me for preventive care during pregnancy and after birth. They’re learning that connecting with this part of their body and trusting the process leads to better outcomes and postpartum recovery. Recently, one of my (very pregnant) clients came in after being told her baby was in a breech position, and excitedly texted me after our session: “She’s moved to my right side. You are magic. Thank you for helping me loosen up that side so she can move freely throughout!”
As a practitioner, I aim to help patients regain control and improve their quality of life. Pelvic PT is for everyone!
Rising Awareness and Demand in Charlotte
Several factors are contributing to the growing demand for pelvic floor physical therapy in our community:
1. Increased Education and Awareness: More healthcare providers and organizations are educating the public about pelvic floor health and the benefits of pelvic floor therapy. This effort has led to greater awareness and willingness to seek help.
2. Postpartum Care: Many women now understand the importance of pelvic health during pregnancy and the postpartum period. I’ve seen an increase in clients seeking preventive care during pregnancy and recovery after childbirth. Women are now understanding how important it is to build back strength in their bodies strategically after giving birth to prevent future pain and pelvic issues. Also, there is growing awareness that pelvic floor physical therapy can educate pregnant women on how to go into birth as prepared and as strong as they can to decrease the chance of interventions.
3. Positive Outcomes and Testimonials: Personal stories and testimonials from patients highlight the effectiveness of pelvic floor physical therapy. These narratives inspire others to seek similar treatments.
