What is a doula?

What is a doula and how do I work with one

In my practice I do a lot of birth prep work.  I love that women are becoming aware of the value in being proactive about their birth and postpartum healing, and curious about things that they can do to try to prevent interventions, complications, and injury to their body.  I am a big believer that understanding connection to your body (including pelvic floor) and having an action plan for how to interact with labor, contractions, and pushing helps women to trust their bodies, to trust the process, and to be able to have some control over their births.  During birth, it helps us to take some of the power back.  And that knowledge helps to give us something to hold onto and focus on during a very unknown and unpredictable moment in our lives.   And, learning about birth, birth positions, breathing, visualization, pelvic floor connection, and postpartum healing can greatly improve recovery after birth.

DOULA a wonderful birth support professional

There is a wonderful birth support professional that I realize is such a common part of discussion in my line of work, but so many people have never heard of….a doula!  I love that it is a funny and interesting word to someone who has no idea what it means, and I get the question all the time: “So what is a Doula?”  A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to their client before, during, and after childbirth. I love when my clients have decided to be supported in their birth or their early postpartum days by a doula because I know the preparation work, we do in the clinic is complimentary to the work that they do.  During this wonderful but potentially overwhelming time, when it’s difficult to remember anything, you have learned in the past because you are dealing with whatever is happening in the moment, a doula’s words will echo my own and I know my clients will be well supported during the process of birth and in their physical and emotional healing.

I help to set your body up for a strong, successful birth and then your doula will support and guide you through it.

There are so many wonderful doulas in the Charlotte area and if you are looking for one or are curious if you would benefit from finding one, please reach out to me and I can talk you through it.  I am going to highlight a few resources below that can also aid your search but know that this list is not exhaustive!  The most important thing is finding someone who you feel comforted and supported by and everyone is different.
